About Ken McDonald
Ken is a lifelong resident of Avalon, having grown up and continues to live in his hometown of Conception Bay South. Ken knows the riding of Avalon like the back of his hand. If you ask Ken about growing up, a point of pride will always be that he’s spent the past 59 years living on the same road, along with his two brothers, his son, John and lots of close family and friends.

Before entering federal politics, Ken earned his Diploma in Accounting from the College of the North Atlantic, he then went on to become small business owner of a home appliance repair business that took him all over the Avalon peninsula. His time as a business owner allowed him to meet people from all walks of life, and while he didn’t know it at the time, prepared him for a later career in public service.

In 1993, Ken was first elected to Municipal Council in his hometown of Conception Bay South. He had 7 years of service to his community as a councillor when in 2013 he was elected mayor of the Town of Conception Bay South.

Ken was first elected the Member of Parliament for Avalon in the 2015 general election. In his first four years as a Member of Parliament, he was proud to be the voice of Avalon, and of Newfoundland and Labrador in the House of Commons. Together with his colleagues, Ken was able to usher in record investments in the Canada Child Benefit, in our fishery, in infrastructure and in our future.

Ken has sat as a member of the House of Commons Standing Committee on Fisheries and Oceans since 2016, and in 2018 was honoured to be elected chair of the committee, a role he continues to serve in to this day. The committee’s work has touched on nearly every facet of the industry, and it’s some of Ken’s proudest work to date.

Ken was re-elected in Avalon during the 2019 general election. Today, Ken works harder than ever to address the real problems and concerns of the people of this province. He believes that the best results come from strong representation, that is what Ken stroves for every day.

In his spare time, Ken spends his time on the golf course, volunteering where he can in the riding and spending his time with his grand-kids. Together with his wife, Trudy, they have 3 children and 6 grandchildren and step-grandchildren.
