Age Well at Home Initiative
June 10, 2022
Do you or do you know someone who represents an organization in Avalon which helps seniors?
The “Age Well at Home” (AWAH) is a federal funding initiative composed of two streams:
1. In-Home Support Pilot Project funds organizations that offer eligible volunteer-based services to seniors.
Eligible services may include:
• meal preparation or delivery,
• light yard work,
• snow removal and
• home visits
Organizations can receive up to $800,000 in funding; and,
2. Scaling up for Seniors which funds eligible organizations to help them expand services that have shown positive results in Canada.
Under that stream, organizations can receive up to $2 million in funding.
After a lifetime of hard work, seniors in Avalon want - and deserve to live healthy, safe, and independent lives. Most of the seniors I talk to in the riding want to stay in their own home, in the communities that support them, for as long as they possibly can.
They also want to increase their sense of belonging and connection to their communities, but this can become difficult as they get older. This leads many vulnerable seniors to move to supportive care such as a senior’s home (and some rural areas in Avalon don’t even have a retirement centre) sooner than they would have needed to if they had adequate support at home. Low-income, and otherwise vulnerable seniors may be particularly at risk.
