These three projects totalling $5.2 million for the small craft harbours of Riverhead, Jerseyside and Port-de-Grave will help build on our government’s commitment to strengthening our fishery and coastal communities for generations to come.

 

This funding comes from our Budget 2021 where we were able to secure more than $300 million for Small Craft Harbour facilities throughout the country, of which $16 million will be spent right here in Avalon, and close on $77 million across Newfoundland and Labrador.

 

Riverhead will receive $1 million to extend their marginal wharf to address their capacity needs. This will mean more boats will have a safe space to tie up for the fishing and off season.

Jerseyside facility in Placentia will see an investment of $1.7 million to replace a portion of their finger pier and upgrade electrical on site.

 

Port-de-Grave will see a replacement of a portion of their timber crib wharf that will see an investment of $2.5 million. This will reinforce a portion of the wharf that sees a lot of traffic, and make loading and offloading safer for their users.

 

Nothing gives me more joy than seeing the advocacy and hard work of our local harbour authorities pay off. They know first hand what their fishers need, and how their facilities could be improved. By securing this funding, we are making the lives of our fish harvesters safe, more efficient and will ensure their kids and grandkids can see the fruits of this industry for years to come.
