Over $11M Invested in Small Craft Harbours in Carbonear and Harbour Grace
July 8, 2021
Anyone who’s ever grown up in a rural community in Newfoundland knows exactly how important the wharf is to the character of the town.
It’s a social, economic and cultural hub.
That’s why I was thrilled when in Budget 2021, our government allocated $300 million dollars to invest in Canada’s Small Craft Harbours.
$16 million dollars will be spent here in Avalon, and today I was thrilled to announce the first of those projects to move ahead in Carbonear and in Harbour Grace.
Carbonear will see an investment of $4.95 million to replace their existing wharf, launch way and harbour authority building. This wharf is well over 50 years old, and this project is desperately needed.
In Harbour Grace, we’ll be investing $6.6 million in a complete reconstruction of the wharf on the north side. This facility is a heavily trafficked commercial fishing harbour, with large fishing vessels looking for space to expand and grow. This investment means this state of the art facility will be able to accommodate more vessels than ever before, contributing greatly to the local economy.
I’d like to thank the Harbour Authorities of both Carbonear and Harbour Grace for their tireless advocacy on behalf of their facilities and its users, and to the staff at Small Craft Harbours for working with the harbours to get these projects underway.
