Today the Honourable Chrystia Freeland announced a historic budget which highlights our Government’s commitment to continuing our path forward on the road to recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. Here are just a few of the key highlights:
Affordable Daycare:
Our plan will aim to reduce fees for parents with children in regulated child care by 50 per cent on average, by 2022, with a goal of reaching $10 per day on average by 2026.
Support for Small Craft Harbours:
This budget will mean $300 million over the next two years to DFO to repair, renew and replace small craft harbours strengthening the resilience of rural and coastal communities.
Increase to OAS for Seniors:
Budget 2021 proposes to meet the immediate needs of seniors 75+ by providing a one time payment of $500 in August 2021, as well as a 10 per cent increase to OAS payments for these seniors starting July 2022.
Community Infrastructure Support:
$500 million over 2 years to the Regional Development Agencies.
Support for the Tourism Industry:
$1 Billion over three years starting this year.
Protecting the Environment:
$17.6 billion towards a green recovery to create jobs, build a clean economy, and fight against and protect against climate change.
Support for Seasonal Workers:
Budget 21 proposes legislative changes to ensure that all self-employed fishers are treated equally by extending the temporary changes for the entire benefit period.
Supporting Small and Medium Sized Businesses:
Budget 2021 plans to assist over 160,000 businesses with new technology to make them more competitive in a global economy.
