Infrastructure Announcement in the Towns of Carbonear and Victoria
October 23, 2020

It is a pleasure to announce more than $1 Million dollars in federal funding for four green infrastructure projects in the towns of Carbonear and Victoria!

In the Town of Carbonear, we will invest over 900,000 dollars towards three projects: the Valley Road sewer upgrade, Water Street water, sewer and street upgrading and, Marshall Drive water, sewer and street upgrading.

In the Town of Victoria, we will invest 165,000 dollars towards the Ash's Lane Water and sewer extension and drainage improvement. This will improve local roads and add more water hydrants in the Town of Victoria!

Together, these projects will provide area residents with greater access to clean, potable water, improved sewer service, and will improve both municipalities’ capacity to better manage storm water overflows. Our investment will create a healthier, cleaner environment to live in, while also creating immediate and long term jobs, promoting economic growth at a time when our country needs it.

These announcements come after the Hon. Catherine McKenna, the Minister of Infrastructure and Communities, announced an expansion under the Investing In Canada Infrastructure plan to speed up project approvals, expand the scope for qualifying infrastructure projects, and offer a bigger federal cost-share. We are doing this through the COVID-19 Resilience Stream that has earmarked up to $3.3 billion in federal funding.  These investments will provide residents with more reliable and efficient water and waste water services, and create a healthier environment to live in.

We are also bringing in the Canada Healthy Communities Initiative that will fund small, locally developed projects that can have a big impact in dealing with some of the effects of the pandemic. With projects such as more welcoming outdoor spaces, and public Wi-Fi, we’re giving communities options on how they can invest for the future.

This morning myself, Steve Crocker, Minister of Public Safety Newfoundland and Labrador and MHA for Carbonear—Trinity—Bay de Verde, Frank Butt, Mayor of Carbonear, and Barry Dooley, Mayor of the Town of Victoria gathered in Carbonear for the announcement.
